Add 1 (one) bottle of the Flame Guard Liquid per gallon of acrylic latex coating. Apply two coats. Coverage is 250-300 sq. feet.   Let dry between coats.

Mix thoroughly, then brush, roll or spray.  

Always test compatibility before using.

TESTING INFORMATION:  Flame Guard Liquid has been tested in accordance with ASTM E-84 Standard Method of Testing for Surface Burning Characteristic of Building Materials.   

Test Results: ASTM E84: Southern yellow pine and cement gypsum: Flame Spread = 0 Smoke = 85 over cement gypsum; Flame = 85 Smoke = 175 over southern yellow pine. 

CANADIAN TESTING:   ULC S102:  

Zero Flame Spread =  0 and  Smoke = 0.  Tested on:  ToughRock 5/8-in 4-ft x 8-ft Regular Drywall Panel.

Flame Guard Liquid can also be used with cellulotsic and synthetic textile fibers.

The CAN/ULC S102 is used to test materials that will be installed on walls and ceilings.    

Because it is impossible to test Flame Guard Liquid on every substate or in every coating, it is recommended that the end user test before using and for suitability and compatibility of proposed use.

YES!  Unlike other fire retardant paints, the Flame Guard Liquid is an additive that allows you to tint to any color in the specturm.

FLAME GUARD LIQUID works by suffocating the substrate from the flame — therefore, if there is no oxygen for the flame, there is no fire. LIQUID IS NOT INTUMESCENT, meaning it is not a foam.  

Flame Guard Liquid slows the flame spread making the paint film flame retardant.  

Flame Guard Liquid is designed to “slow” flame spread of the treated coating.   Once applied, it makes the paint film fire retardant.

The ASTM E-84 test method is a 10-minute fire test response standard intended to provide comparative measurements of the surface burning behavior of building materials to exposed surfaces.  It tests for flame spread and smoke density measurements of select substrates under specific fire exposure conditions.  

The purpose of ASTM E-84 is to determine the relative burning behavior of the material by observing the flame spread along the specimen.

ASTM E84 testing produces two index values, the Flame Spread Index (FSI) and the Smoke Developed Index (SDI), used by code officials, fire marshalls, designer companies, and architects to determine whether a product is suitable for its intended application.

Class A:  FSI = 0—25        SDI = 0—450

Class B: FSI =   26—75     SDI=  0—450

Class C: FSI =  76—200    SDI = 0—450

Companies will test exterior materials because the building code for the specific end use will require the test. The Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), Inspectors, Fire Marshalls, and Architects decide what test is acceptable based on the building code requirements or the specific end use of the product. Outdoor wood decks are required to be tested to the ASTM E84 in some U.S. States. The ASTM E84 is widely known as an indoor materials test with very little use for outdoor materials because of the elements with weather. The whole reason for testing is to comply with the building code. The NFPA 285 is considered the required exterior wall test. As far as using it on the exterior - it is designed to mix into water-based latex coatings, but it would be their responsibility to test their final product." Intertek

The liquid flame retardant is a water-soluble chemistry, which is what allows it to be mixed into water-based latex paints. Due to outdoor elements that coated surfaces can be exposed to for extended periods of time (water, humidity, and etc.)  the flame resistance is unknown because the E-84 testing that was conducted does not include extended exposure to the outdoor elements such as water or humidity  The Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), Inspectors, Fire Marshalls, and Architects decide what test is acceptable based on the building code requirements or the specific end use of the product. Therefore, it would be up to the end user to test for themselves for suitability purposes."
